The Highlands and The Brute Golf Courses

The Courses were outstanding. There was NOTHING that could be complained about with the conditions of the
courses. The greens were immaculately kept. Not a divot to be found. You would be hard-pressed to find a
public course that is better shape than the courses at the Grand Geneva Resort. Everything about the outing
was first class; from the driving range to the putting green to the clubhouse. This was country club golf at a
fraction of the cost.
We had a total of 26 golfers to come out and participate in the Hacker's Championship. Our first round began
on the Highlands Course. Which in my opinion was tougher than the Brute although the slope and course
ratings are much lower. On the Highlands there was no room for error off the tee. If you sliced or hooked a tee
shot, you were OB. The rough was so tall that I lost a ball in it, and had to go back to the tee and hit another.
This was not golf at Joe Louis or Tuckaway. If you were in the rough you were not hitting a wood. Not even a
long iron.

Taking a closer look at the scores, we can see that in the Hackers Division.
There were 8 golfers within 8 strokes of the leader. The final group of Jerry,
KG, Cornbread and BNix battled hard.
After the first 18 holes in the Duffers Division, it was basically between four
golfers. The big question....Could 'The Champ' hold off the three golfers who
were all only two strokes behind him. As we headed to the Brute, I had some in the Hackers Division complaining
bout playin' from the tips. I told them to get their games together. If you put your ball in the fairway, you can score.
But judging by our scores, not one player was under par (71).
Playing the Brute was much different than the Highlands. On the Brute, it wasn't the 7000 yards that was a
problem. It was the greens. Combine the difficulty of the greens at Balmoral, Glenwoodie, and Palmira and multiply
them times ten. The fairways on the Brute were wide with enough room to handle slight hooks and slices as
opposed to the Highlands. It was not uncommon to see three and four putts on the Brute.
